LUV

BITES.

Sometimes love bites, and sometimes it nibbles! This Valentine’s Day, name a mealworm or rodent after someone special (or not-so-special) and treat our zoo friends to a Valentine’s snack!

Think love bites?

Name a mealworm or a rodent after an ex and enjoy a little catharsis as our zoo friends make it disappear!

Love Nibbling at you?

Dedicate a delicious treat in honor of someone special—because love should be shared, even in snack form!

Is 2025 ALL ABOUT YOU?

Name a snack after yourself and let it be a symbol of fresh beginnings (and a tasty meal for our animals).

Whether you’re saying goodbye to the past, want a fun way to show someone you care, or just need a good laugh, dedicate a  mealworm or rodent, and show the animals at the EVZ a little love too! Every name feeds an animal and supports enrichment programs at the Edmonton Valley Zoo, helping our furry, scaly, and feathery friends thrive!

FAQ’S

How does this campaign support the care and welfare of animals at the Valley Zoo?

The campaign is designed to support the ongoing care and welfare of animals at the Valley Zoo. The funds raised through this campaign will go directly towards our animals and continue to provide them with healthy diets, care and environmental enrichment.

These resources are critical to ensuring that the animals at the Valley Zoo have a comfortable and healthy environment in which to live, as well as to help provide additional resources for the staff at the Valley Zoo, who work tirelessly to ensure the well-being of the animals in their care.

Our campaign is a unique way for people to make a positive impact on the lives of animals at the Valley Zoo and support their care and welfare.

What kind of animal enrichment programs does the Valley Zoo offer?

At the Edmonton Valley Zoo, animal enrichment is an important part of day-to-day animal care. Daily enrichment is a requirement for all AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums, including the Edmonton Valley Zoo. More than 350 animals live at the Zoo and the dedicated team of caregivers work together to support the nutritional, medical and behavioural needs of every animal.

More information about the Valley Zoo’s enrichment program can be found here!

Can I visit the zoo on Valentine’s Day and watch the worms be fed?

Unfortunately the zoo will not be open to visitors the day of the event. However, we’ll be sharing videos on Instagram and Facebook where you can watch the feedings from home!

Where did the idea come from?

We were inspired by the Bronx Zoo’s “Name a Roach for your Valentine” and San Antonio Zoo’s “Cry Me A Cockroach” fundraisers and wanted to put a fun twist on the idea that worked for the Edmonton Valley Zoo!

Are there refunds?

This donation is non-refundable.

Where and when can I watch the feeding frenzy?

Be sure to follow us on social media @BuildingOurZoo to view the live feedings on Valentine’s Day!

What if I don’t live in Edmonton, can I still participate?

Absolutely! This is an online-based fundraiser, which means that anyone, anywhere in the world, can participate. Whether you live in Edmonton or not, you can still symbolically adopt an animal and make a donation to support their care and welfare.

Do we feed live rodents to our snakes or other animals?

It is important to note that we do not use live rodents for feedings. We believe in providing the highest standards of animal care and always prioritize the health and well-being of our animals. The pre-frozen rodents we use are part of a well-rounded diet for our animals and are delivered from a trusted whole food supplier. They are thawed and prepared for feeding according to strict health and safety guidelines. Our commitment to the care and welfare of our animals extends to every aspect of their lives, including their diets. By providing a balanced and nutritious diet, we ensure that the animals at the Valley Zoo have the best possible quality of life.

Can I pick which snake my “honoree” is fed to?

No, the snakes will be fed on their regular schedule and we are unable to direct your “honoree” to an individual snake at this time.

Will You contact my “honoree” for me?

No, the Valley Zoo Development Society will not contact your “honoree”. This campaign is designed to be a fun and positive way to support the care and welfare of animals at the Valley Zoo.
