Shaping the Future of the Edmonton Valley Zoo: A Vision for the Next 15 Years.

Since 1989, the Valley Zoo Development Society (VZDS) has proudly partnered with the City of Edmonton and the Edmonton Valley Zoo to support its growth, conservation programs, and educational initiatives.

The Valley Zoo Development Society proudly funded the creation of the 2025 Edmonton Valley Zoo Masterplan, a 15-year roadmap guiding the Zoo’s transformation. This comprehensive plan builds on past successes, while envisioning a future where visitors connect deeply with wildlife and learn the importance of conservation.

The plan sets a clear path for growth, renewal, and innovation. It addresses aging infrastructure, enhances animal habitats, and ensures the Zoo remains a hub for conservation, education, and research.

THE MAKING OF A ZOO MASTER PLAN

The 2025 Edmonton Valley Zoo Master Plan was developed through a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, collaborative process. The Consultant Team has steered the process, facilitating engagement with the diverse Zoological Project Team that includes the leadership and project management from the City of Edmonton, staff members from across many zoo departments, and the Valley Zoo Development Society, with inspiration from best practices from globally renowned industry-leading institutions.

Key Elements of the Master Plan Include:

  • Continued focus on climate-appropriate and uniquely Canadian species
  • Expanding landscape immersion for both animals and guests
  • Upgrading aging habitats and building new infrastructure
  • Supporting education and conservation programs through innovative, accessible spaces

How the Plan Was Created

The process unfolded in three phases:

Phase I: Situational Analysis

A comprehensive review of the Zoo’s strengths, opportunities, and current conditions laid the foundation for the plan.

Phase II: Strategic Alignment

The Zoo’s mission, vision, values, and objectives were refined to ensure the Master Plan reflects the organization’s long-term priorities.

Phase III: Master Plan, Site Concept, and Business Case

The final phase combined research, stakeholder input, and innovative design to produce a detailed site concept, functional program, and implementation plan. Cost estimates and business planning ensure the plan is sustainable, achievable, and aligned with best practices.

Highlights of Recent Growth & Renewal:

With support from VZDS, the Edmonton Valley Zoo has already undertaken significant projects guided by the Master Plan, including:

  • R. Mollot Arctic Wolf Habitat (2025)
  • Conservation Carousel
  • Northern Leopard Frog Conservation Breeding Facility
  • Upgraded washroom facilities and visitor amenities

POLAR BEAR FEASIBILITY STUDY

As part of the Master Plan, the Valley Zoo Development Society proudly supported the Polar Bear Feasibility Study funded by Gregg Distributors Ltd. This study assessed the viability of introducing polar bears to Edmonton and informed the design of their habitat in the upcoming Coastal Arctic Zone. The study ensures any future polar bear residents will enjoy an environment that meets the highest standards of wellbeing, enrichment, and guest experience.

INVESTING IN THE ZOO’S FUTURE

The 2025 Master Plan represents a commitment to the future of the Edmonton Valley Zoo, its animals, and its community. By funding and supporting these initiatives, the Valley Zoo Development Society will ensure the Zoo continues to inspire, educate, and conserve for generations to come.
