Coastal Arctic

Status: Planning
Budget: $100,000,000+
Projected Completion: 2035

The Edmonton Valley Zoo is entering a bold new phase of transformation with the announcement of its 15-year Masterplan, and the Coastal Arctic Zone is the next major project the Valley Zoo Development Society is proud to champion.

This immersive new area will build on the success of Arctic Shores, which was recognized in 2012 with the Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA) Thomas R. Baines Award for Excellence in Habitat Design and Development, and will elevate the zoo into a world-class northern destination that celebrates the wildlife, cultures, and ecosystems of the Arctic.

A Zone Like No Other

Coastal Arctic will draw visitors deep into the heart of our planet’s oceans. Designed as a fully immersive journey, the zone will transport guests into the cold, rich, and vibrant ecosystems found across Arctic coastlines.

Arctic Shores, already a visitor favourite, will welcome Steller’s sea eagles, Arctic foxes, and puffins, while the iconic pingo landscape will be brought to life with new interactive elements.

The result is an authentic Arctic adventure that stands out across Canadian zoos by showcasing a remarkable diversity of mammals, birds, fish, and invertebrates.

Featured Highlights of the Coastal Arctic Zone include:
  • Polar Bears
  • Sea Otters
  • Steller’s Sea Eagles
  • Arctic Foxes
  • Puffins & Murres Mixed-species Habitat
  • Coastal Arctic Underwater Viewing Gallery
  • Arctic Lumpfish & Ice Algae
  • High Bear View & Underwater Windows
  • Alaskan Marmot Habitat
  • Northern Fur Seals
  • Harbour Seals

Up Close With Arctic Oceans & Wildlife

A new Coastal Arctic Gallery will bring guests face-to-face with aquatic species like Arctic lumpfish and cod. Visitors will learn about ice algae, feel the rhythm of coastal tides, and discover the crucial role Arctic oceans play in global health.

The zone will stand out amongst Canadian zoos by showcasing arctic biodiversity with habitats for mammals, birds, fish, and invertebrates. Underwater viewing spaces will create unforgettable moments where guests can watch sea otters and other marine life glide through the water just inches away.

The Pinnacle Experience: A Landmark Polar Bear Habitat

With the support of Gregg Distributors Ltd., the Polar Bear Feasibility Study confirmed the potential for welcoming polar bears to the Edmonton Valley Zoo. This transformational element is central to the Coastal Arctic Zone.

The habitat will feature:

  • Sweeping landscapes with varied terrain and water features
  • Underwater viewing beside the sea otter space
  • Barrier-free vistas into expansive terrestrial areas
  • A rooftop perspective where guests look across to bears exploring elevated terrain

A Hub for Arctic Conservation and Innovation

The Coastal Arctic Zone creates powerful opportunities to share timely stories about climate change, northern ecosystems, and the actions needed to protect Arctic biodiversity. As the Gateway to the North, Edmonton is uniquely positioned to lead.

With strong partnerships, including connections with the University of Alberta, the Edmonton Valley Zoo will become a center for Arctic research, conservation programs, and public education.

The Edmonton Valley Zoo is a Polar Bears International Arctic Ambassador Centre (AAC).
