CLEAN-UP EVENT

Throughout the 2023/24 school year, the Grade One students from St. Maria Goretti School embarked on transformative community walks that stirred our souls and ignited a passion for caring for our planet. Our students eagerly participated in these walks to explore the wonders of our community and to deepen our connection to the land that sustains us.

At the start of each walk, our young learners listened intently to our heartfelt student-generated land acknowledgement, gaining a deeper appreciation for the animals that inhabit our river valley. With dedication and enthusiasm, our students crafted bird feeders during the winter months, hung them in the trees, and diligently collected litter to make our world a more vibrant and healthy place.

Through these activities, the students discovered the profound impact of their actions on the environment. They realized that by picking up litter, they were not only keeping our community clean, but also safeguarding the river and the ocean from pollution that could harm marine life. They embraced their role as stewards of the earth, understanding that every small act of kindness and care contributes to the preservation of our precious home.

A visit to the Edmonton Valley Zoo further solidified our students' commitment to protecting our planet. It instilled in them a sense of purpose and a deep understanding of why it is crucial to nurture and safeguard the Earth, along with all the plants and animals that call it home. The experience inspired our students to become passionate advocates for conservation and environmental stewardship, empowering them to make a positive impact on our world.

BOTTLE DRIVE

Building a sustainable future is something that is very important to us at Gibbons preschool. We take part in this every class by having a recycling container available for students to use for their renewable plastics. Our preschoolers are now able to spot the difference in which items from their lunch are recyclable. It is so important to lay the foundations for this early so that they have the best possible futures later. We decided to take this one step further and organized a bottle drive. We had help from everyone, including our students. Our community came together and helped us collect bottles so that we could raise money for our preschool. Our volunteers helped sort the bottles at the recycling depot. We were able to raise money to help us buy a new table and chairs and we are even looking into how to recycle the old one.

Our students had a lot of fun learning that they could turn old juice boxes and yogurt containers into new things and earn money while doing so. They were excited to go home and ask their parents to save their recyclable bottles for our bottle drive. It was great to see the excitement on their faces when our community showed up to support us. The students were happy when they learned that recycling old bottles and plastics also helps save animals in the ocean and in the wild because instead of ending up in landfills, our recyclables can be made into new things. That sounds like a win win for everybody.

WASTE REDUCTION & CLEAN-UP

First, we did a schoolyard cleanup. We discussed all the items we found and made plans to put out more garbage cans to reduce the litter. Following that we made posters to hang up around the school reminding students and staff about the three r's. We talked about in our class how we can reduce the amount of waste. We thought we could make art projects out of recyclable materials, use paper multiple times, bring water bottles, and use metal and containers instead of plastic baggies. We will continue with the project for the remainder of the year as it creates of sense of ownership and accountability to students.
