Following the birth of twin red pandas Fred and George on July 7, 2024, at the Edmonton Valley Zoo, we launched a Twitch stream to share their journey and raise awareness about this incredible endangered species. While the cubs have since outgrown their nest box, our stream lives on—now offering a peek into the indoor red panda habitat, where you can watch the whole family’s daily antics. We also host special live events on the last Friday of each month from 1:30–2:30 PM (MDT), bringing viewers even closer to the red pandas we love!

Our Red Panda Legacy

The Edmonton Valley Zoo’s red panda journey began in 2004 with the arrival of Koko and Lala from Japan—our very first red pandas and the start of our participation in the Red Panda Species Survival Plan (SSP). Since then, we’ve proudly welcomed 12 cubs born right here at the zoo and have housed a total of 19 red pandas. Koko and Lala’s legacy lives on through an incredible lineage: 5 cubs, 5 grand-cubs, 9 great-grand-cubs, and 8 great-great-grand-cubs.

The knowledge we’ve gained through years of care, observation, and collaboration has allowed us to become recognized within the SSP community as experts in red panda husbandry. Today, 20 red pandas with ties to the Edmonton Valley Zoo live in facilities across North America and Korea, either contributing to breeding programs or providing companionship to other red pandas.

We’re honoured to support the future of this incredible species, one generation at a time.
